In Somalia, respect for human rights remains a deeply sensitive and under-addressed issue. Decades of conflict, weak governance, and the dominance of rigid social norms have created an environment where minority groups, women, and marginalised communities often face systemic discrimination, exclusion, and violence.

At Horn Concern, we recognise that FoRB is not only a core human right enshrined in international law, but also a cornerstone for peace, tolerance, and inclusive development. Our advocacy, therefore, focuses on promoting awareness, protecting individuals and communities from violations, and creating safe spaces for dialogue across divides, applying the human rights-based approach (HRBA). This includes:

  • Documenting human rights abuses and violations of FoRB to ensure visibility and accountability.
  • Providing legal support and referrals for individuals and communities facing threats and discrimination.
  • Raising awareness through trainings, community dialogues, and campaigns that highlight the importance of tolerance, diversity, and peaceful coexistence.
  • Engaging policymakers and traditional leaders to advocate for policies and practices that protect fundamental freedoms and reduce persecution.

In the wider Horn of Africa region, similar challenges persist, as countries grapple with religious extremism, political repression, identity-based conflict, and restrictions on civil liberties. The targeting of religious and belief minorities has fueled instability, displacement, and mistrust between communities across borders. Horn Concern contributes to regional peace and resilience by collaborating with civil society, interfaith networks, and regional actors to promote human rights, strengthen protections for vulnerable groups, and build cultures of tolerance and mutual respect in the region for lasting peace and community integration.

We believe that advancing human rights and FoRB in Somalia and the Horn of Africa is not only about defending freedoms, but also about laying the foundation for just, inclusive, and peaceful societies where diversity is celebrated as a source of strength rather than division.
